The SSHRC Exchange Publication Awards support the publication of manuscripts—written or edited by ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ faculty—by Island Studies Press (ISP). These awards are being funded by a SSHRC Institutional Grant, therefore, the subject matter of the publication must be compatible with SSHRC’s mandate (see for more information). One (1) award is available for 2024.

The award of $7,000 will be disbursed to Island Studies Press to cover publication costs (including editing, photo and other permissions, design, printing, marketing, and other costs associated with publishing a book). Authors will be offered ISP’s standard publication contract, which ensures authorial copyright and includes a royalty structure. Authors will also see their manuscripts reviewed through a peer-review process where appropriate.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Eligible applicants must be Tenured, Tenure Track, Term or Sessional ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Faculty, who are employed by ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ at the time of application.
  • Manuscripts may be single- or multi-authored results of academic research projects; textbooks; edited proceedings of a conference; or works of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, or drama that pertain to the author(s)' discipline.
  • The subject matter of the manuscript must meet SSHRC’s mandate.
  • Past recipients of the SSHRC Exchange Publication Award or ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Internal Publication Award cannot apply for support for the previously funded manuscript.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applicants are to submit a package that includes: 

  • Book proposal/summary (maximum of one page)
  • A completed or close-to-complete manuscript and a Table of Contents. Note: the manuscript must be complete no later than three months after winning the award
  • A curriculum vitae that includes your credentials as author(s)/editor(s) 
  • Two letters of support (e.g., from your Department Chair, Dean, professional association)

Selection Committee: A selection committee comprised of the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Island Studies, plus two members of the ISP Publishing Committee, will assess the proposals and make a recommendation to the Associate Vice-President Research. The Managing Editor of the ISP will be a member of the Committee in a non-voting capacity. To assist in making its recommendations, the selection committee will use a single-blind peer review of the submitted manuscript. Final decisions on publication remain with the Island Studies Press and the Institute of Island Studies.

Reporting: A copy of the book, along with a narrative outlining the publication process—prepared in collaboration with staff at Island Studies Press—must be submitted when the book is complete. Previous recipients of the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Internal Publication Awards include Lori Mayne, Department of English, Laurie Brinklow, Institute of Island Studies, Linyuan Guo-Brennan, Faculty of Education, and Josh MacFadyen, Faculty of Arts.

Pickleball Indoors for ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ staff/faculty/retirees

Tuesdays, Noon–1 pm, September 17–December 3

Try this very popular sport. We have paddles for you to use, but feel free to take your own if you have them. No experience necessary. A great environment to try out the sport and connect with colleagues. This program is FREE for ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ staff/faculty/retirees and provided by the Healthy Campus Committee.

ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ staff/faculty/retirees will be able to register six days in advance each week.

Mindful Yoga and Body Awareness class for ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ staff/faculty/retirees

Thursdays, 12:10–12:55 pm, September 19 & 26 and October 3 & 10  

This yoga class provides gentle stretching, promotes flexibility, and teaches participants to tune into the body with their breath. As we move through body awareness, you'll notice areas that feel tight, tense, or restricted. This class teaches techniques to release this tension and the stress we hold in our bodies. There is a short five–seven-minute savasana at the end. 

This class is FREE and only for ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ staff/faculty/retirees. Must register weekly. Participants can pre-register six days in advance of class.

Ravensburg 1494: 10 years after the city’s first witch-hunt, a process led by Henricus Institoris, co-author of the infamous Malleus maleficarum. This was the setting for a fourth-year role-playing course that Richard Raiswell ran last year, which focused on an imagined return of the Inquisition to this important early modern trading centre, and the intellectual, social, and political tensions it exposed.

Bring your lunch and join us to discuss the pedagogy underlying teaching-through-game-play, and sketch some of the advantages and difficulties inherent in such an approach.

Please join us for  lecture by Dr. Lúcia Helena Marques Ribeiro, visiting scholar at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, who will introduce us to Portuguese literature through the work of four 20th century authors: Érico Veríssimo, Guimarães Rosa, Clarice Lispector, and João de Melo.

The presentation will be in Portuguese with consecutive interpretation into English. 

Dr. Ribeiro is a professor and researcher of Portuguese literature at the University of Brasilia, Brazil, with a focus on Portuguese literature from the Azores and mainland Portugal following the 25th of April Revolution, as well as the colonial wars in Africa and post-colonialism. Her research also expands into children's literature, exploring themes of myth, psychoanalysis, and symbolism in childhood.

The ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Health and Wellness Centre will offer walk-in clinics for the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine for students on August 29, and on September 6, 13, and 20, from 8:30 to noon. Students are asked to bring their PEI health card or proof of international insurance, and their student ID. They can also request an appointment for a vaccine by emailing the Health and Wellness Centre at healthcentre@upei.ca. Please note: the vaccine supply is limited.

MenB vaccines prevent against a type of meningococcal disease that targets the lining of the brain and spinal cord and is potentially life-threatening. With a high mortality rate (10%), meningococcal disease is a medical emergency. It can cause death within days if prompt antibiotic treatment is delayed. The infection typically triggers symptoms such as severe headache, sudden high fever, skin rashes, vomiting, and a stiff neck. Among survivors, 10% to 20% have long-term complications, which may include hearing loss, neurologic disabilities, and digit or limb amputations.

The disease spreads between people through saliva and respiratory fluids. Engaging in activities with infected people, such as sharing drinks, vapes, or kissing, may put you at risk. The risk is higher for young adults up to the age of 25 years and those who are living in a dormitory or crowded space as the bacterium spreads quickly through large groups.

MenB vaccine is highly recommended by the Canadian Immunization Guide to protect you from this vaccine-preventable disease. Beginning April 2023, PEI began offering free MenB vaccine to students attending a post-secondary school. To learn more about MenB, visit .

Join the Institute of Island Studies in welcoming Dr. Eric Mjits from the University of Aruba to open the Island Lecture Series this fall! This is an in-person event that starts at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 17, in the Faculty Lounge (SDU Main Building). All are welcome!

ABOUT THE LECTURE:

Sustainable Island Solutions through STEM: the SISSTEM programs at the University of Aruba

How can we find sustainability solutions at the crossroads of global technological development and the specificity of island contexts and island communities, and how can we build academic programs that build upon the opportunities of islandness? Over the past decade, a team at the University of Aruba has taken on the challenge to develop the Sustainable Solutions through Science programs, a cluster of innovative STEM programs. Dr. Eric Mijts will dive deep into the conceptual underpinnings of the SISSTEM program including social sciences and humanities, the contextual setting, the complexities of the implementation of the programs as well as the impacts the programs have at institutional and national level as well as on the development of the field of island studies.

ABOUT DR. MJITS:

Dr. Eric Mijts is a researcher, educator and manager at the University of Aruba with a keen interest in program design for sustainable development in small island states. He is director of the University of Aruba Research center, co-founder and coordinator of the Sustainable Island Solutions through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (SISSTEM) project cluster and he is co-founder of the Academic Foundation Year. He facilitates several international students research exchange programs. As a researcher Eric is also affiliated to the University of Antwerp and is an active partner in the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and in the Metabolism of Islands think tank. His research and publications focus on multilingualism, language policy and planning, education for sustainable development and inclusion/exclusion processes. Driven by his passion for the balance between humanity and the environment, Eric supports several international research and education projects on marine and terrestrial ecosystems health, governance and restoration.

Since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have followed the 13 Moons or moon cycles to ground themselves in their teachings and ensure balance. Life on Earth is connected to and regulated by Grandmother Moon, through the tides and waters, which stabilizes our Earth's position and determines the cycle of women and the birth of new life. Grandmother Moon helps us with healing and is strongly connected to human life. Every phase of Grandmother Moon has a different focus, and this month, we focus on the strength and beauty of slowing down as Mother Earth begins to awaken from her rest. Leading us will be Doris Googoo, a well-respected Knowledge and Language Keeper in Mi'kma'ki. We ask participants to bring a bottle of water for blessing and to refrain from recording the ceremony (photo or video). If you would like to wear a skirt but do not have one, you may borrow one during the ceremony. Sacred fire will be lit and ceremony beginning at 7 pm. As always all are welcome.

The Co-operative Education program is currently accepting applications until Wednesday, September 18 at 4 pm. Eligible programs include Actuarial Sciences; Analytics; Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture; Biology; Business Administration; Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics; Environmental Studies; Financial Mathematics; Foods and Nutrition; Mathematics; Physics; or, Statistics.

Students from ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Kinesiology 3430 class are seeking participants to take part in a 4-week exercise training program, plus pre- and post-assessment sessions (6 weeks total). Students will create personalized exercise training programs for each participant, based on their fitness, skill level, and personal interests.

Participants must be between 30-70 years of age. This program is directed towards individuals who are looking to become more physically active in their day to day lives. Participants will meet in-person with their student trainers once a week. No previous experience is necessary.

Shelley Montreuil, Co-founder & CEO of trippl, brings over 15 years of Travel Tech Management, Project Management, and Communications expertise to the table. As a working musician who has toured Eastern Canada extensively, she has earned her band manager/road warrior status, and she has more than a few tricks up her sleeve for thriving in that kind of lifestyle.

She was leading a remote tech team before it was cool, which has allowed her to live and work in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, Ottawa, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Iqaluit, Nunavut. Shelley has worked as a Capital Campaign Fundraiser, Musician / Band Manager and a Web Developer. The common thread among these disparate roles is that she is an experienced entrepreneur who knows how to bring enthusiastic partners to the table and successfully execute a vision. She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Certified Agile Professional (SSGI-CAP).
