The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is looking to hire a Student Research Assistant position working on a project. The proposed research project is to convert low-value organic waste into engineered biocarbon materials to remove synthetic dyes found in the effluents from textiles, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plastics, rubber, and printing industries. The proposed methodology is to initially turn sawdust into carbonaceous materials by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), followed by either chemical activation using KOH and ZnCl2, heteroatom doping using urea and melamine, or magnetization introducing Fe3+ and Fe2+.

Overall, effective and stable engineered biocarbon materials for the removal of synthetic dye removal can be prepared using low-value sawdust, which can help address one of the significant environmental concerns.
