Diagnostic Services invites applications from experienced and motivated laboratory technologists to provide technical laboratory services in the discipline of veterinary Parasitology. Diagnostic Services is a fee for service laboratory with internal AVC clients and external clients from across Canada. This is a fast-paced diagnostic laboratory with specified turn-around times.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing technical support for the clinical veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratory
  • Explaining diagnostic test results and offering guidance on diagnostic test selection to healthcare professionals (human and veterinary) as requested
  • Applying parasite recovery techniques in the necropsy of wild and domestic animals, finfish, and shellfish
  • Performing diagnostic tests for the detection of parasitic infections in feces, intestinal contents, urine, blood, skin scrapings, body fluids, tissues, and organs using various different techniques
  • Using compound and dissecting microscopes, staining techniques, and ELISA technology for the recovery and identification of helminth, arthropod and protozoan parasites, and infections thereof in wild and domestic animals, aquaculture species (finfish/shellfish) and wild fish hosts
  • Placing orders for the veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratory
  • Supporting the ISO 17025 accreditation process for the parasitology diagnostic laboratory, (i.e., writing and updating SOPs, contributing to equipment calibration, maintaining equipment logs)
  • Evaluating and preparing samples for the Quality Assurance Program
  • Assisting with the biosafety certification of the CL2 parasitology diagnostic laboratory
  • Responsible for biohazard and chemical inventory of the parasitology diagnostic laboratory
  • Technical support for the parasitology research laboratory
  • Coordinating and assisting with major technical aspects of Parasitology research projects. Research involves parasitology techniques, necropsies, parasite isolation, parasite culture, and parasite identification, as well as molecular biology techniques (i.e., cell culture, primary cell collection and culture, nucleic acid purification, gel electrophoresis, conventional and real time quantitative PCR, protein extraction, processing and analysis, and proteomics techniques)
  • Provide support and contribute to the research programs of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and residents
  • Management of supplies used in the research laboratory
  • Requesting quotes, generating requisitions, and participating in account tracking for purchases
  • Responsible for the biosafety certification of the CL2 parasitology research laboratory
  • Responsible for biohazard and chemical inventory of the parasitology research laboratory
  • Providing teaching support to prepare and assist in parasitology labs for first- and fourth-year veterinary students. This involves preparing parasitology slides and material, assisting in the delivery of laboratories, assisting students, and ordering supplies

Experience / Skills Required:

  • BSc degree required, MSc degree preferred, and a minimum of 3 years of research and/or diagnostic laboratory experience in parasitology and/or molecular biology
  • Medical Laboratory Technology Certification by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science is considered an asset
  • Candidates must demonstrate organizational, problem-solving, time management and computer skills, must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations
  • Must have the ability to learn and adapt to new techniques and be able to work with minimal supervision
