Every week, 秀色短视频 Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Kiera Rigby and Mark Lloyd, the 秀色短视频 Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for October 30鈥揘ovember 5!

Kiera Rigby is a fifth-year forward on the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball team, and an honours science student from Charlottetown. Rigby averaged 18 points per game over two games this past weekend, and shot an impressive 41% from the field and 74% from the foul line. She also averaged four rebounds and three steals per game. 鈥淜iera had two outstanding offensive games against Saint Mary鈥檚, picking up where she left off last year,鈥 said coach Greg Gould. 鈥淪he also played one of her best defensive games.鈥

Mark Lloyd is a third-year stand-off on the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Rugby team, and a Bachelor of Business Administration student from Stratford, PEI. The Panthers defeated the University of New Brunswick over the weekend to win the NB/PEI University Men鈥檚 Rugby Championship and will host St. Francis Xavier University this Saturday for the Maritimes championship. 鈥淥ne player who really stood out Saturday night was Mark Lloyd,鈥 said coach Charles Waddell. 鈥淗e kicked three of four conversions, two of two penalty attempts, and scored the game-winning try. Mark controlled the game very well and made sure we played in the right areas from the fly-half position.鈥

Panthers at Home, November 10-11

Friday and Saturday are packed for the Panthers at home. Catch action for Women鈥檚 and Men鈥檚 Hockey, Women鈥檚 and Men鈥檚 Basketball, and the Maritimes University Men鈥檚 Rugby Championship game.

秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball starts the weekend with the first of two games against the University of New Brunswick. The tip-off for both Friday and Saturday鈥檚 games is at 6:00 pm.

鈥淎fter a split with Saint Mary鈥檚 on the road last weekend, our team is looking forward to playing at home against another strong AUS opponent,鈥 said coach Greg Gould. 鈥淚 felt we defended well against Saint Mary鈥檚 and are looking to step up our offence against UNB. It often comes down to the little things like rebounding, taking care of the basketball, making our free throws, and sharing the basketball.鈥

秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Basketball also hosts UNB for a pair of games. Friday and Saturday鈥檚 games begin at 8:00 pm.

鈥淭his weekend鈥檚 games present some very serious challenges for us defensively,鈥 said coach Darrell Glenn. 鈥淚f we want to have any hope of competing, we will have to do a much better job in defensive transition and defensive rebounding than we did last weekend.鈥

秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Hockey plays at home in MacLauchlan Arena Friday and Saturday night. Friday, the Panthers take on Dalhousie University; Saturday, it鈥檚 St. Francis Xavier University鈥檚 turn to play. Both games start at 7:00 pm.

鈥淲e continue to work very hard, clean up some areas, and focus on the process,鈥 said coach Forbes MacPherson. 鈥淭here are times that we are very pleased with our game. We need to pull together and hopefully get rewarded with a pair of wins.鈥

Fresh off of its victory last weekend for the NB/PEI University Men鈥檚 Rugby Championship, the Panthers are ready to play St. Francis Xavier University in the Maritime University Men鈥檚 Rugby Championship. The game starts at 2:00 pm.

鈥淚 think the last time we played St. FX, I was playing for 秀色短视频 and not coaching, so we certainly aren鈥檛 familiar with the opponent we face on Saturday,鈥 said coach Charles Waddell. 鈥淥ur plan is to work hard, play our game, and leave it all out on the field.鈥

秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Hockey has just one game at home this weekend. The Panthers play Universit茅 de Moncton at 3:00 pm. Coach Bruce Donaldson says his team is hungry for a win.

鈥淭his will be our fourth game against them (including exhibition), and Moncton has won each time by a goal,鈥 said Donaldson. 鈥淲e really need to do a better job defending on the penalty-kill. Moncton moves the puck very well and does a great job of getting the puck to open players for scoring opportunities. This is a big weekend for our program鈥攚e have some ground to make up in the standings, so we need all our players on the same page.鈥

秀色短视频 is proud to participate in 鈥淜eep It Social鈥濃攁 program that 秀色短视频 Athletics and the PEI Liquor Control Commission have partnered on that helps students make responsible decisions when it comes to alcohol. Visit keepitsocial.ca to learn more.

Lee Wesselius heads to 2017鈥18 U-SPORTS Cross-Country Championship in Victoria

As the best university men鈥檚 cross-country runners in Canada compete on Vancouver Island this weekend, 秀色短视频鈥檚 Lee Wesselius will be right there with them. Wesselius has been the anchor for the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Cross-Country team all season and is keen to wear the green and white at the University of Victoria.

The Panthers took the bronze at the recent Subway Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men鈥檚 Cross-Country Championships in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The team finished third in the 10-kilometre race, behind Dalhousie University and St. Francis Xavier University鈥斝闵淌悠碘檚 best finish since returning to cross-country competition three years ago.

鈥淭he key to my success this year has been consistency and hard work,鈥 . 鈥淚've managed to stay healthy and haven鈥檛 had any serious injuries. I also had my best summer of training to date and have been running more than I ever have in the past.鈥

Wesselius is trying to not let success go to his head. The native of River Glade, New Brunswick has stuck to the training routine that has worked for him all season. Still, the prospect of racing on the national stage is a big challenge, and an exciting one.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always nice when you get the opportunity to duke it out with the other top guys in the country and see exactly where you are,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he past several months have all been centred on having a good race at U-Sports so hopefully I can perform well once I get there.鈥

Coach Colin MacAdam was reflective of the team鈥檚 successful season after the AUS finals in Wolfville. He talked about his optimism , especially the prospect that potential cross-country stars will see 秀色短视频 as a place to train and compete.

鈥淚n years past there鈥檚 been quite a number of PEI athletes run for other universities,鈥欌 MacAdam said. 鈥淣ow we鈥檝e got them at 秀色短视频. We鈥檙e going to be moving up the ladder. It鈥檚 great.鈥欌

Research on Tap: mining for 鈥渃hemical gold鈥

Research on Tap returns Thursday evening with a public discussion about a new 鈥済olden age鈥 in antibiotic discovery. The first half of the 20th century was an exciting era for scientists searching for drugs to effectively treat bacterial infections. But those discoveries are now rare, and bacteria are getting better at resisting our most powerful tools.

Researchers like 秀色短视频鈥檚 Logan MacIntyre are searching for new antibiotics using new methods. While some worry that drugs that can be derived from bacteria and fungi have been exhausted, MacIntyre will explain new methods that may take this search in a new and exciting direction.

Logan leads the discussion Thursday, November 16 at 6:30 pm in The Wave.

秀色短视频 announces the Panther Subway Athletes of the Week, November 6 to 12

Every week, 秀色短视频 Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Reese Baxendale and Ryan MacKinnon, the 秀色短视频 Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for November 6鈥12!

Reese Baxendale is a first-year guard on the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball team, and a Bachelor of Science student from Sussex, New Brunswick. While the Panthers split a pair of games over the weekend with the University of New Brunswick Reds, Baxendale shone in both match-ups with an average of 16 points per game, hitting 45% of her shots (including 39% from beyond the three-point line). She also averaged three rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game. On defence, she held UNB鈥檚 top scoring point guard to just five points in two games. 鈥淩eese played an exceptional pair of games against UNB on both ends of the floor,鈥 said coach Greg Gould. 鈥淪he looked like a veteran out there! Her speed, ability to attack the basket, and shoot both pull-ups and the three-point shots makes her difficult to guard.鈥 Baxendale is currently ranked 11th in the AUS for scoring, and the top rookie in the country, averaging 12.8 points a game.

Ryan MacKinnon is a third-year year defenceman on the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Hockey team and a Bachelor of Business Administration student from Summerside. The Panthers played two games over the weekend, defeating Dalhousie University 5鈥4 on Friday and losing to St. Francis Xavier University 4鈥2 on Saturday. 鈥淲ith a couple injuries to our defence right now, we are relying on Ryan even more,鈥 said coach Forbes MacPherson. 鈥淗e is playing big minutes in all situations and had the game winning goal versus Dalhousie Friday.鈥

秀色短视频 announces Panther Subway Athletes of the Week, November 13鈥19

Every week, 秀色短视频 Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Moshe Wadley, the 秀色短视频 Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for November 13鈥19!

Jenna Mae Ellsworth is a second-year guard on the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball team and a Bachelor of Science student from Charlottetown. The Panthers dropped a pair of games over the weekend to Cape Breton University, but Ellsworth shone, averaging 23 points per game, shooting 43% from the field, 43% from beyond the three-point line, and a perfect 100% from the foul line. She also averaged two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. 鈥淛enna Mae had an outstanding offensive weekend against CBU while holding her mark to an average of four points per game defensively,鈥 said coach Greg Gould.

Moshe Wadley is a first-year guard on the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Basketball team and a Bachelor of Business Administration student from Toronto, Ontario. The team lost back-to-back games against Cape Breton University, but coach Darrell Glenn liked what he saw in his first-year guard. 鈥淢oshe plays above the rim,鈥 said Glenn. 鈥淎t 5鈥10鈥, Moshe pulled down a game-high twelve rebounds in our second game against CBU. Rebounding is one of those selfless skills that separates a competitor from an average player. Moshe stepped up his desire to win when we needed it most.鈥
