Canadian criminal defence lawyer James Lockyer, CM, will speak about wrongful convictions in Canada during the Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law presentation on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at The Guild, 111 Queen Street, Charlottetown, at 4:30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

A partner in the Toronto office of Lockyer Zaduk Zeeh, Mr. Lockyer is a founding director of Innocence Canada (formerly known as the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted), a Canada-wide organization that advocates for the wrongly convicted. In this capacity, he has been involved in more than 30 high-profile wrongful conviction cases including those of Guy Paul Morin (1995), David Milgaard (1997), Clayton Johnson (2002), Steven Truscott (2007), Robert Baltovich (2008), William Mullins Johnson (2008), Romeo Phillion (2010), Tammy Marquardt (2011), Leighton Hay (2014), John Salmon (2015), Maria Shepherd (2016), Frank Ostrowski (2018), Joyce Hayman (2021), Jacques Delisle (2021), Bernard Doyle (2023), Brian Anderson and Allan Woodhouse (2023), and Robert Mailman and Walter Gillespie (2024).

There will be a basic biosafety training session on May 15, 2024, at 1:00 pm in AVC 287N. Topics will include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, as well as biosecurity training. This session is open to everyone, including graduate students.

To attend, you must pre-register by contacting Jacky Buell by the end of the day on May 10, 2024, by email (hse@upei.ca) or by phone (902-566-0901). Please provide your name, department, your supervisor’s name (if applicable), email address, and phone number in your email or voice message. Please indicate if you are a graduate student. 

NOTE: An online basic biosafety training refresher course is available for those who need it. 

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions (new, renewal, or amendment) is Friday, June 7, for the June meeting. 

Please note that as of June 1, 2020, all animal user protocols must be submitted through ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Researcher Portal at

For new protocols, select "applications" and for renewal or amendment protocols. select "events."

TÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ ACC SOPs and Codes of Practice can be accessed through myÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ at . 

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Note:  All investigators are reminded that any deviations in animal use, including unexpected mortality, must be reported to the ACC and University Veterinarian Jonathan Spears at 902-620-5026.

The Lab2Market Validate (L2M Validate) event, previously scheduled for May 2 at 10 am, will now take place on May 13 at 9:30 am.

Lab2Market Validate (L2M Validate) gives researchers the opportunity to critically test and evaluate their ideas in the entrepreneurial landscape by speaking to customers about their ideas. This carefully curated 16-week experience is complemented by funding, workshops, and mentorship from industry experts – all with market exploration at its core.

Applicants must be masters, PhD, or postdoctoral students within Atlantic Canada, applying with a supervisor. Each team will receive $15,000 in funding.

A series of information webinars on the Rhodes Scholarship for Canada will be offered this spring for students interested in learning more about this prestigious opportunity for fully funded postgraduate study at Oxford University! Applicants, advisors, and faculty who may wish to encourage students are welcome to attend and learn everything from the background of the Scholarship, what's needed to apply, and the Oxford experience as shared by recent scholars. There will also be a Q&A with current and recent Scholars.
