Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Prince Edward Island, announced today that four exceptional leaders in their respective fields will be awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees at the University鈥檚 Convocation ceremonies on May 12, 2018.

Honorary degrees will be conferred upon William (Bill) LeClair, Anne Love (n茅e Michael), J. Weston (Wes) MacAleer, and E. Anne Smith.

鈥淓ach of our recipients is a distinguished individual who has made a significant impact in their respective fields and their University community,鈥� said President Abd-El-Aziz. 鈥淭hey are excellent role models for our graduates. By conferring them with honorary Doctor of Laws degrees, we acknowledge and thank them for their many contributions to society.鈥�

The 秀色短视频 Senate approved the honorary graduands at a meeting earlier this year in accordance with the University鈥檚 policy that states honorary doctorates of laws will be presented 鈥渢o individuals who display the highest levels of achievement in public and community service.鈥�

The Convocation ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 12, in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre with the morning ceremony beginning at 10:00 am and the afternoon ceremony at 2:30 pm.

The 2018 honorary degree recipients from 秀色短视频 are as follows:

William (Bill) LeClair is an alumnus of 秀色短视频, graduating in the University鈥檚 first class in 1970. He was president of the student union and was named life-president for the class of 1970 by his fellow students. Mr. LeClair was a varsity athlete during his time at Saint Dunstan鈥檚 University, one of the University鈥檚 two founding institutions, and later 秀色短视频, playing men鈥檚 hockey.

In 2001, Mr. LeClair was named a distinguished alumnus by the 秀色短视频 Alumni Association. He has been a long-time volunteer with the Calgary Friends of 秀色短视频, being the driving force behind a $1 million endowment to support Alberta students to attend 秀色短视频. On top of his volunteer fundraising activities, Mr. LeClair created an award for a varsity athlete. He is a huge advocate of 秀色短视频, recruiting students through his passion for his alma mater. That passion extends to his family; his daughter attended 秀色短视频.

Anne (Michael) Love has spent her life contributing to her Island community. In 2001, she was awarded the Governor General鈥檚 Caring Canadian Award, which is presented to groups and individuals whose voluntary contributions provide extraordinary help or care to people in the community. 

Mrs. Love is an avid supporter of post-secondary education and served as president of the University Women鈥檚 Group, an organization that raised money for scholarship funds, welcomed the spouses of new faculty members, and greatly contributed to campus social life by organizing many events. She often urged students to make volunteering part of their adult lives. She was a member of the 秀色短视频 Alumni Association Board, and she and her late husband, retired math professor Dr. Harry Love, established an endowment fund at 秀色短视频 to support an award to recognize student achievement in perpetuity. She was named a 秀色短视频 Founder in 2003, and Dr. Love was named a Founder in 2007鈥攎aking them 秀色短视频鈥檚 only Founders couple.

J. Weston (Wes) MacAleer is a graduate of Saint Dunstan鈥檚 University鈥檚 Class of 1966, and has served as a member of the 秀色短视频 Board of Governors, alumni representative on the 秀色短视频 Senate, and member of the 秀色短视频 Potential Within Campaign Steering Committee, which resulted in capital funding for the K.C. Irving building. Mr. MacAleer served for six years as the chair of the Nichola K. S. Goddard Foundation Fundraising Dinner, which supports an endowed scholarship at the University and a project for the 秀色短视频 School of Sustainable Design Engineering. For decades, he has personally supported a scholarship in memory of his brother, Noel, an engineering student who passed away while studying at 秀色短视频. 

Mr. MacAleer moved to the Northwest Territories in the late 1960s, where he had an immense impact on Yellowknife and the surrounding region. He led the organization of the first-ever Arctic Winter Games, and he started a cable TV station, which was the most northerly station in the world and the first private broadcasting enterprise in the Northwest Territories. He and his wife, Connie, moved back to PEI in 1988. He has worked tirelessly for those who are in need in the community, province, and country. Mr. MacAleer鈥檚 contributions to the Island community have been recognized through numerous medals and awards, including the 2014 PEI Humanitarian of the Year.

E. Anne Smith is a proud Islander, successful business woman, respected community leader, tireless volunteer, beloved mother, mentor, and friend. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a high level of professionalism, hard work, and dedication, which earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. 

After 10 years of administrative service to former Premier Alex Campbell and then to Leader of the Opposition Joseph Ghiz, Ms. Smith embarked on a career as an investment advisor. She was a trailblazer in a male-dominated profession and an inspiration and role model to many women who followed in her path. She became a Designated Certified Investment Manager and Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute, one of the highest honours in her field. She served on the 秀色短视频 Board of Governors from 1987 to 1995. Members of her family鈥攕ons Stephen and Andrew and grandsons Alex and Ben鈥攁re graduates of the University, and a granddaughter is a student in the Faculty of Nursing. In addition, Stephen received a 秀色短视频 Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016.

Ms. Smith has given back to her community, locally, regionally, and nationally in countless ways, including currently as a volunteer with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation. What is especially impressive is the wide range of educational, cultural, economic, and community organizations and boards through which she has served her fellow citizens. The community鈥檚 respect and admiration for Ms. Smith is rooted in her personal reputation as a woman of impeccable integrity, ethics, and honour.

秀色短视频 will host a public lecture by Dr. Mark Tremblay, chair of Canada鈥檚 Physical Activity Guideless Committee, on Canada鈥檚 24-hour movement guidelines for young children. The presentation will be Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm in room 105 of 秀色短视频鈥檚 Health Sciences Building. All are welcome.

Dr. Tremblay will discuss Canada鈥檚 Guidelines for Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep for children aged 0鈥�4 years. His lecture will explore how these guidelines were created, the evidence supporting the guidelines, and how they are being implemented. The information will be relevant for teachers, early childhood educators, parents, health promoters, policy makers, and members of the general public.

Professor Mark Tremblay has a Bachelor of Commerce degree in sports administration and a Bachelor of physical and health education degree from Laurentian University. His graduate training was from the University of Toronto where he obtained his MSc and PhD from the Department of Community Health with a specialty in exercise science. Dr. Tremblay is the Director of Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research (HALO) at the Children鈥檚 Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and Professor of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, chair of the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance, chair of the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines Committee, and founder of the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network.

The Winter鈥檚 Tales Authors Reading Series is proud to present a public reading and presentation from Liz Howard on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 pm in the Faculty Lounge of 秀色短视频鈥檚 SDU Main Building. All are welcome.

Howard, of Anishinaabe descent, grew up in Northern Ontario surrounded by wilderness. Her life path took her south to earn a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with high distinction from the University of Toronto. After graduation, she enrolled in her first poetry course and began writing poetry seriously, and her path branched into two intertwined tracks.

One led to her research career in cognitive neuroscience and psychology at the University of Toronto. On the other, she earned a Master鈥檚 degree in creative writing at the University of Guelph. In 2016, she became the youngest winner of the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize for her first collection, Infinite Citizen of the Shaking Tent, also a 2015 finalist for the Governor General鈥檚 Award for Poetry.

Howard weaves her Northern Ontario upbringing into her poetry. 鈥淚 always joke that people are including their dogs in the census. Almost everyone knows each other. It鈥檚 very isolated... right at the start of the Arctic watershed. We鈥檙e so small, we don鈥檛 have a Tim Horton鈥檚,鈥� she says of her hometown of Timmins.

Faithful to her landscape and community, she includes in her poetry not only forests and marshlands, fields and rivers, but also lumber mills, tailing ponds, and logging trucks rumbling the foundations of houses.

The realms of science also permeate her poetry. 鈥淚鈥檝e studied neuro-anatomy and neuroscience and physiology and psychopathology, so those are the realms that I draw from. This is the language and the ideas and the frameworks that I spent so much time trying to wrap my head around.鈥�

Her poetry and life-work will resonate with Islanders鈥攚ith close communities surrounded by the wilderness of ocean鈥攁nd with communities of scientists and artists whose lives often intersect, including at our numerous Tim Horton鈥檚.

Each year, Canada鈥檚 Outstanding CEO of the Year provides scholarships to ten exceptional students to further their education ambitions. Among the list of recipients of the Future Funds Awards is Andrew Chapman, a fourth-year student in 秀色短视频鈥檚 Faculty of Business.

The CEO of the Year program, through its futures fund scholarships, encourages and supports our next generation of leaders. Scholarship recipients are chosen from ten schools of business across the country, based on their academic achievements, leadership qualities, and extracurricular activities.

Andrew Chapman is an exceptional business student and highly successful in the classroom and broader university community. He has consistently achieved excellent marks in his courses and is very highly regarded by professors within the Faculty of Business. 

Chapman is vice-president of the 秀色短视频 Business Society. He has enjoyed tremendous success as a member of 秀色短视频鈥檚 case competition team.

He is a recipient of the Tim Banks Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, the 秀色短视频 Faculty Association Bronze Medal for third-highest average (tied) across all faculties at 秀色短视频, the BDO Canada Scholarship in Accounting, the PEI Credit Union Award, and the university prize for the student with the highest average in the third year of the business program. He has also been named to the dean鈥檚 list for each year he has been a student at 秀色短视频.

鈥淭his honour is well deserved,鈥� said Dr. Juergen Krause, dean of the Faculty of Business at 秀色短视频. 鈥淎ndrew exemplifies a successful business student. He excels in his academic studies, serves his peers and fellow students in the faculty through his engagement in the Business Society, and he is an ambassador for 秀色短视频 nationally and internationally as a member of our successful case competition teams. 鈥�

秀色短视频 will open multi-user all-gender washrooms on the main levels of the Robertson Library and SDU Main Building on March 5, Vice-President Administration and Finance Jackie Podger announced in a memo to students, faculty, and staff.

All-gender washrooms are spaces that anyone can use, regardless of their gender identity or expression. Podger wrote that re-designating the washroom spaces to all-gender allows 秀色短视频 to be more inclusive, help provide a safer campus environment, and be welcoming to all members of the campus community.

While 秀色短视频 has already re-designated several single-user washrooms across campus to be all-gender, these spaces will be the first multi-stall washrooms in public areas that have been converted for all-gender use.

鈥淏y expanding the washroom options on campus, we are able to offer conveniently located, comfortable, and safe facilities for a greater number of people,鈥� said Podger. 鈥溞闵�短视频 values diversity and inclusion, so when we heard from campus community members and the 秀色短视频 Student Union, we worked together to respond to the needs of campus by re-designating these spaces to all-gender.鈥�

All-gender washrooms are beneficial for transgender and gender non-conforming people, who often experience harassment and even physical violence in gender-specific facilities.

秀色短视频 Student Union President Chelsea Perry said, 鈥淗aving all-gender washrooms, whether multi-stall or single-user, makes the 秀色短视频 campus safer and more welcoming. This expansion of facility options shows that 秀色短视频 respects everyone's right to choose the washroom that is appropriate for them.鈥�

A number of multi-stall washrooms on campus will remain gender-specific, but are inclusive for all those who identify with that gender.

In an effort to create awareness about all-gender washrooms, the Robertson Library has partnered with Dr. Ann Braithwaite, professor in Diversity and Social Justice Studies, to present 鈥淭oilet Training (Law and Order in the Bathroom),鈥� a documentary video that surveys the policing of gender in restrooms鈥攁nd the persistent discrimination, harassment, and violence towards people who do not culturally fit as male of female. The presentation is part of the Robertson Library video series and will be shown on Monday, March 5 at 4:30 pm in the LINC, with a discussion to follow.

Students and faculty with 秀色短视频鈥檚 Environmental Studies program are hosting an information symposium entitled 鈥淥ur Plastic World: The Breakdown.鈥� The event runs from 7:00 pm鈥�9:00 pm on Tuesday, March 6 in the Duffy Amphitheatre, room 135 of 秀色短视频鈥檚 Duffy Science Centre. All are welcome.

Three informative speakers will provide insights into different aspects of plastic waste and the challenges we face in dealing with it. A panel discussion will follow.

The panellists include:

Dr. Nino Antadze is currently an assistant professor of environmental studies at the 秀色短视频. Her work focuses on ethical implications of environmental issues and environmental planning processes and on the role of social and environmental innovations in sustainability transitions. Dr. Antadze earned a PhD in urban and regional planning from University of Waterloo and has taught courses in environmental studies and planning programs at the universities in the USA and Canada.

Heather Myers is disposal manager at Island Waste Management Corporation. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the 秀色短视频 in 1993. She began work the next year with East Prince Waste Management Commission (Island Waste Management Corporation鈥檚 predecessor) as site technician at the East Prince Waste Management Facility and then facility manager in 1996. Myers is responsible for the proper disposal of solid waste, including the management and oversight management of Waste Watch sites designated for that purpose.

Dr. Tony Walker has more than 25 years environmental research and monitoring related experience. He is currently an assistant professor at the School for Resource and Environmental Studies, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. He previously worked in industry for a decade as an environmental consultant, specializing in monitoring and management of contaminants in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. He completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham, UK studying terrestrial pollution in the Russian Arctic arising from resource extractive industries. During his early research career, he spent four years living and working in the Antarctic.

Despite capturing a handful of individual awards Wednesday afternoon, 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball still has some unfinished business.

The biggest prize is up for grabs and the Island squad is poised to make a run for the AUS Championship this weekend.

Hopes are riding high and for good reason. The young Panthers are better equipped than they've been in years. Their sophomore trio鈥擩enna Mae Ellsworth, Carolina Del Santo, and Karla Yepez鈥攏ow know what it takes to win in this league and will do whatever they can to avoid the same early exit they made last season. Veterans Kiera Rigby and Jane McLaughlin lead this youthful nucleus into battle one last time, looking to end their careers with a title.

鈥淏eing a year older and having that experience certainly helps,鈥� said head coach Greg Gould. 鈥淲e鈥檙e a mature yet young team and have experience playing in big games.鈥�

At times this season, the 11鈥�9 Panthers were virtually unbeatable. You don't have to look much further than in late January when they dethroned the nation鈥檚 No. 1 Acadia Axewomen 88鈥�68. At other times (usually the second game of a back-to-back), they were a shadow of themselves, labouring through their offensive and defensive game plan.

Now they have no choice. If they want to hoist the championship banner, they鈥檒l have to string together three consecutive wins鈥攁 task they鈥檝e only accomplished once this year.

Standing in their way first is the veteran-laden UNB Varsity Reds, who have five seniors and two fourth-year players occupying their roster. Their 10鈥�10 record doesn鈥檛 tell the full story, however, as six rotation players missed at least five games due to injury, including key pieces Hannah Currie and Grace Wade. As result, their depth has been tested and performed admirably in the face of adversity.

鈥淯NB鈥檚 the deepest team in the league, and they鈥檙e good. It won't be easy,鈥� Gould said.

Gould is anticipating UNB will deploy a zone defence to counteract 秀色短视频鈥檚 ability to get to the basket.

鈥淛ust because they鈥檙e in zone doesn't mean we can't take them off the dribble,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e still need to be aggressive and attack them.鈥�

Rigby, who鈥檚 arguably the league's best perimeter finisher, averaged a career-high 18.4 points per game (third in the AUS) and will be the focal point on offence again. And the Varsity Reds are no doubt planning for her, as well.

鈥淲hen you play teams in the playoffs, one of things they're going to try to do is limit her touches. Defensively, they're going to try to take away things that we do well. If they're going to stop her, they鈥檙e going to give up something else, so we just have to be prepared for other opportunities.鈥�

That opens the door for their perimeter players to make an impact. Ellsworth was recently named as a second-team all-star and will help carry the scoring load. As will her running mate and rookie-of-the-year, Reese Baxendale, who is expected to use her speed to keep defences off balance.

Aside from Yepez off the bench, 秀色短视频鈥檚 depth is their greatest weakness. But big games welcome new heroes and if a combination of Annabelle Charron, Jennifer Newman, Victoria Barbour, and Kimeshia Henry can deliver, the Panthers will be even more dangerous.

Coming off a defensive player of the year award, Del Santo will continue to anchor the defence and be tasked with protecting the paint from oncoming guards. The second-year centre also led the league in rebounds and could steal a few extra possessions off the offensive glass, which could turn the tide between two evenly matched teams.

鈥淪he鈥檚 the one who cleans up the stuff when we break down. She鈥檚 the one who's getting us double-digit rebounds every night and we need big games from her again.鈥�

Come tonight, the test begins. The question remaining: are the Panthers up for the challenge?

鈥淯ltimately it comes down to our own execution,鈥� Gould said. 鈥淚f we want to win, we have to play at our best.鈥�

鈥淚 am pleased to see the 2018 federal budget鈥檚 commitment to science and research through multi-year funding,鈥� said President Abd-El-Aziz. 鈥淭he benefits of these proposed investments will benefit post-secondary institutions and students from coast-to-coast.鈥�

Budget 2018 proposes to invest $925 million over five years to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIRC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).  Budget 2018 also supports increasing diversity in science through greater collaboration between the granting councils, research funding recipients and improved support for women, underrepresented groups, and early-career researchers.

President Abd-El-Aziz noted that 秀色短视频鈥檚 priorities, including involvement with the industry-led , align well with Budget 2018 given our strong research capabilities from across the fields of science, engineering, climate change, environmental studies, and veterinary medicine which are already making positive impacts on Canada鈥檚 ocean economy.

The Soci茅t茅 Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin (SSTA), Coll猫ge de l'脦le, and the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education at the 秀色短视频 are pleased to host the Honourable Jean-Marc Fournier, Quebec鈥檚 Minister responsible for Canadian Relations and the Canadian Francophonie at a public lecture on Wednesday, March 7. 

Minister Fournier has been touring the Maritime Provinces, promoting co-operation between Quebec and francophone communities across the country. The visit to Prince Edward Island coincides with 鈥淟es Rendez-vous de la francophonie,鈥� a collection of events taking place in Canada from March 1 to 21 celebrating French culture as part of the Journ茅e internationale de la Francophonie (March 20).

During his talk, Minister Fournier will address the topic, 鈥渂uilding the Canada of tomorrow, together.鈥� After the lecture, there will be a question period. The event will take place in Bill and Denise Andrew Hall, room 241, and begins at 11:30 am with a buffet lunch. Admission is free. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

Dr. Don L. Baker, Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia, will give the inaugural lecture in 秀色短视频鈥檚 new Asian Studies International Seminar and Korean Studies Speaker Series on Thursday, March 8, 2:30 pm, Faculty Lounge (Room 201), SDU Main Building.

Dr. Baker will give a presentation called 鈥淔rom the Mountains into the Cities: The Transformation of Korean Buddhism in the Twentieth Century鈥� on Thursday from 2:30 to 3:45 pm. The storm date for the event is Friday, March 9, 2:30 to 3:45 pm, Room 213, SDU Main Building.

A renowned scholar in the area of East Asian history, especially Korea鈥檚 religious, intellectual, and cultural history, Dr. Baker is frequently invited by many leading universities and research institutes around the world to give special public talks. He joined UBC in 1987 as its first professor of Korean Studies (KS) and was entrusted with the task of building a Korean Studies program. Under his leadership, it has become the best KS program (with BA, MA, and PhD streams) in Canada and one of the premier KS programs in the world. For many years, he also served as director of UBC鈥檚 Centre for Korean Research. He has authored, edited, co-edited, or translated eight scholarly books since 1996. His Sourcebook of Korean Civilization, Vol. II, and Korean Spirituality are accepted as two popular textbooks in Korean history or religion courses and are frequently cited by scholars and students. He recently published a pioneering monograph, Catholics and Anti-Catholicism in Chos艔n Korea (University of Hawaii Press, 2017). 

鈥淎s the first of our international seminar and speaker series,鈥� says Dr. Edward Chung, coordinator of Asian Studies and director of the Korean Studies Project at 秀色短视频, 鈥渢his is a wonderful lecture topic on modern Buddhism, especially for understanding the religious and cultural transformation of Buddhism in twentieth-century Korea under the influence of Japan, Christianity, Western ideas, and socio-economic changes. This public talk is significant because of the growing popularity (public awareness) of Buddhism in our Island communities as well.鈥�

This international seminar and speaker series project is an initiative of the 秀色短视频 Faculty of Arts, Asian Studies Program, and its Korean Studies Project, and is supported by a major international Seed Program for Korean Studies grant (AKS-2017-INC-2230001) through the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea, and Korean Studies Promotion Service, the Academy of Korean Studies.
