The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) program of its phase-three funding. Among them is an exciting project led by the 秀色短视频. The project, 鈥淚ntegrating Innovative Research & Training for Improved Sustainable Livelihoods in a Smallholder Dairy Farming Region鈥攑hase 2鈥�, aims to develop Canadian and Kenyan students into global citizens through enriching courses, community engagement, research, and development projects in Canada and Kenya, and to provide training and resources to enhance sustainability and food security of the poor rural Buuri region of Kenya.

The project is co-led by Dr. John VanLeeuwen, a professor of epidemiology and ruminant health management at 秀色短视频鈥檚 Atlantic Veterinary College, and Dr. Colleen Walton, an assistant professor in 秀色短视频鈥檚 department of Applied Human Sciences. Other 秀色短视频 faculty involved in writing the proposal were Dr. Jennifer Taylor and Charlene VanLeeuwen of Applied Human Sciences, and Dr. Shawn McKenna and Dr. Luke Heider of AVC鈥檚 Farm Service group.

鈥淲e are in the final year of our first four-year QES project, which has achieved all of its milestones to date, and it is a pleasure (and a relief) to secure four more years of QES funding through this new project,鈥� said Dr. VanLeeuwen. 鈥淭he new QES project builds on what the partners have accomplished together in the first phase, which appears to have been well-received by the funders. It has been a great team effort.鈥�

鈥淚 am so excited that we have this opportunity through the QE Scholars program to continue and expand international community-based research and learning opportunities for our foods and nutrition students,鈥� said Dr. Walton. 鈥淪tudents return from these experiences as changed people with global awareness and capacities they only dreamed of, and we have seen significant improvements in the capacity of our partners in rural Kenya.鈥�

The project team includes a Canadian partner, (FHF鈥攁 PEI-based NGO with 35 years of experience in Kenya), and three Kenyan partners, the Buuri Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society (made up of more than 1600 dairy farmer members), the University of Nairobi, and Kenyatta University.

The project will see three graduate students from Kenya and 13 undergraduate students from 秀色短视频 working together in Canada and Kenya to train Buuri dairy farmers to:

• conduct research projects;
• train Buuri smallholder dairy farmers on best management practices in dairy health management broadly, and infectious disease control, particularly bovine viral diarrhea virus  infections and S. aureus udder infections;
• train Buuri primary school students, staff, and parents (along with the women鈥檚 groups to which mothers belong) on how to use FHF-supported enhanced gardens and school cookhouses to grow and prepare nutrient dense foods to improve nutritional quality of school and family meals; and
• participate in community engagement and networking activities and cross-cultural, academic, and professional experiences related to nutrition and veterinary  medicine with schools and service groups in Kenya and Canada (and QES networks) to enhance their cultural awareness and improve their research, communication and leadership skills as global citizens.

The project has a number of desired positive outcomes, including the development of Canadian and Kenyan students into new global citizens and leaders with increased veterinary and nutrition knowledge and leadership skills and expanded cross-cultural networks. The team will make substantial contributions to Canadian and Kenyan rural communities in terms of training, resources, and experiences, and will help improve health management and productivity on Buuri dairy farms, and enhance school/community nutrition and food security in Buuri.

The project will be funded with $300,000 from the QES, with another $472,200 in contributions from 秀色短视频 and its partners.

Five students from 秀色短视频鈥檚 Faculty of Science presented at the recent Science Atlantic Aquaculture & Fisheries and Biology Conference in St. John鈥檚, NL. Science Atlantic hosts annual academic student conferences in a number of disciplines. Approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members attend these events each year.

Two 秀色短视频 students were recognized and took home prizes for their honours鈥� research and presentations. Fourth-year honours biology student Emma McDermott won the Canadian Botanical Society Award for her research on 鈥淓ffects of PEI Berries blueberry pur茅e on renal oxidative stress鈥�. The Botany Award is presented annually for the top undergraduate presentation (oral or poster) at the Annual Science Atlantic Undergraduate Biology Conference.

Fourth-year honours biology student Morgan King was awarded the Science Communication Award for his poster presentation 鈥淒efining the role of SOX4/SOX11 during nephrogenesis in vivo鈥�. This prize is awarded to the student who is best able to communicate a science topic to his or her peers.

The National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) recently announced the recipients of its latest round of and . Among the awardees is , an assistant professor at 秀色短视频鈥檚 School of Sustainable Design Engineering.

Dr. Farooque鈥檚 research aims to develop technologies and systems for the application of inputs used in potato farming, including pesticide, nutrients, and irrigation. Under current crop-management practices, these inputs are applied uniformly across a field, without taking into consideration variations in soil, crop, potential yield, climate, and topographical features. This not only increases the cost of production, but also poses a serious threat to the environment in the form of nutrient run-off to water bodies, sub-surface groundwater contamination, and greenhouse gas emissions.

鈥淒evelopment of innovative smart technologies, capable of applying agrochemicals based on soil and crop needs, is a future of modern agriculture to ensure economic and environmental sustainability,鈥� said Dr. Farooque.

Dr. Farooque鈥檚 research program will develop and integrate technologies and systems to identify variations within a field. It will use sensing and control systems to create intelligent machines to ensure better management practices.

Over the five years of the project, Dr. Farooque鈥檚 research program will train three master鈥檚 degree students, two PhD students, five undergraduates, and a research technician.

Dr. Farooque is an award-winning teacher and researcher. He has been developing precision agriculture technologies for agriculture industry in Eastern Canada for several years. He has expertise and skills in engineering design, development and management, bio-systems modeling, instrumentation testing, evaluation of sensors and controllers, hardware and software for automation of machines, sensing and control systems, and mechanical modification.

The 秀色短视频 applauds the Government of Prince Edward Island鈥檚 vision and support for post-secondary education, says 秀色短视频 President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz.

Prince Edward Island鈥檚 Minister of Finance, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, tabled the provincial operating budget for the 2018鈥�19 fiscal year this morning in the Legislative Assembly.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 budget shows the Government鈥檚 strong commitment to 秀色短视频 and its students,鈥� adds President Abd-El-Aziz, who had the opportunity to attend the budget briefing. 鈥淲e are delighted to receive a two per cent increase in 秀色短视频鈥檚 operating grant. This will provide much needed support to the University鈥檚 increased costs that include inflationary pressures.鈥�

The PEI budget document confirms that the core operating grant for 2018鈥�19 will include $32,047,600 for 秀色短视频 and $8,956,100 for the Atlantic Veterinary College.

The Government has aligned several of its priorities with 秀色短视频鈥檚 initiatives, announcing additional support in several areas over-and-above the operating grant. These include:

• supporting a new doctorate of psychology program at 秀色短视频, which will support educating and retaining psychologists in the province;
• committing $210,000 over three years to 秀色短视频 to support a Concussion Awareness Program, which will feature classroom education for school-aged children, concussion recognition training for Island coaches and officials, and important research on return-to-play protocols;
• providing $25 of funding per 秀色短视频 student for mental health supports;
• providing an additional $3,600 for a four-year program towards the cost of tuition; and, 
• providing up to $3,500 in debt reduction grants per year of study if 秀色短视频 graduates reside in PEI within three years post-graduation.

秀色短视频 has been working closely with the provincial government over the past several months to develop a sustainable budget for the University. With today鈥檚 confirmation of 秀色短视频鈥檚 core operating grant from the Government of Prince Edward Island, the University will now move forward with its own budget process.

秀色短视频鈥檚 Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated the 2017鈥�18 season at the 49th annual 秀色短视频 Athletic Awards Gala on Friday, April 6, recognizing outstanding student athletes who have excelled in sport, the classroom, and serving the community. This year, the 秀色短视频 Alumni Association鈥檚 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year award will be shared by Alysha Corrigan, of the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Rugby team, and Bailey Smith, a sprinter on the 秀色短视频 Track and Field Team. The Male Athlete of the Year is Ryan MacKinnon of the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Hockey team.

The event, held at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, included student-athletes, coaches, staff, along with members of the university community, alumni, donors, sponsors, and booster club supporters.

Atlantic University Sport executive director Phil Currie and special guest Marg Bayer were also on hand to present the 32^nd AUS James Bayer Memorial Scholarship Award to Kiera Rigby of the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Basketball team. Rigby is 秀色短视频鈥檚 fourth recipient of the award, and the first Panther to receive it in 21 years.

The award was established in 1985 and is awarded annually to an outstanding student-athlete in Atlantic University Sport for excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, sportsmanship and citizenship. Each of the eleven AUS-member schools nominates one student-athlete for this prestigious award. This year鈥檚 recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship.

James Bayer taught education and physical education at both high school and university levels. He served as supervisor and consultant for the Nova Scotia Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness. At Acadia University, he served as dean of recreation and physical education and as director of athletics from 1978鈥�85. As an administrator in the AUAA and the CIAU, he was a key player in the establishment of intercollegiate athletic policy.

Kiera Rigby was also the recipient of the W.A. Ledwell Award, presented to the student who has demonstrated outstanding athletic ability in the intercollegiate program, academic excellence, and also demonstrates the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and citizenship.

The Gordon and Muriel Bennett Award goes to the male or female student-athlete who, over four years, best combines athletic achievement and academic excellence. This year鈥檚 award went to Emma Martin of the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Hockey team.

Ryan MacKinnon, a defenceman on the 秀色短视频 Men鈥檚 Hockey team, is a graduating business student from Summerside, PEI. He was named an AUS first-team All-Star and is currently playing in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Alysha Corrigan, a fullback on the 秀色短视频 Women鈥檚 Rugby team, is a fourth-year business student from Charlottetown, PEI. She was named an AUS All-Star at the wing position and was a runner-up for the AUS MVP of the Year. She was also voted to the U SPORTS All-Canadian second team.

Bailey Smith, a sprinter on the 秀色短视频 Track and Field team, is a second-year nursing student from Mount Stewart, PEI. She was named the AUS Female Track Athlete of the year for 2017鈥�18.

Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, President and Vice-Chancellor of the 秀色短视频, extends his sincere condolences to the family and friends of Kathleen (Keefe) Murphy, who passed away on Sunday, April 8. The flags will be flown at half-mast in her memory.

As one of the first women who enrolled at Saint Dunstan鈥檚 University (SDU), Kathleen (Keefe) Murphy was a trailblazer in every sense.

For close to 90 years, SDU had accepted only men as students, who were trained as lawyers, doctors, teachers, public servants, and in religious vocations. With the advent of World War II and societal changes that were happening in the late 1930s and 40s, a small number of women applied and were eventually accepted as students at the Island鈥檚 only university.

Mrs. Murphy was one of those early women. After enrolling at SDU in 1945, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree, and she and Lorraine MacNeilly were the first females to graduate.

To celebrate their mother, and honour the memory of all the early women who attended Saint Dunstan鈥檚 from 1945鈥�1969, Mrs. Murphy鈥檚 eight children created a legacy gift in 2017 that supported renovations to the interior of 秀色短视频鈥檚 Chaplaincy Centre and the construction of a small outdoor amphitheatre. Mrs. Murphy, her children, along with many of their children and grandchildren, gathered on the 秀色短视频 campus last summer for a recognition event.

鈥淢rs. Murphy was truly a pioneer for SDU and 秀色短视频. She valued the importance of post-secondary education and instilled this commitment to higher learning in all of her children. It is amazing that each of them, and many of their children, attended 秀色短视频,鈥� adds President Abd-El-Aziz. 鈥淎ll of us at 秀色短视频 express our deepest sympathies to the Murphy and Keefe families on the loss of this remarkable woman.鈥�

Funeral mass shall take place at Saint Dunstan鈥檚 Basilica on Wednesday, April 11, at 10 am.

Christian Norton, who graduated with his Honours Biology degree from 秀色短视频 in 2016, will head this fall to Oxford University with a full scholarship. Norton will complete his MSc in Biology this spring at the Universit茅 de Montr茅al鈥檚 Institut de recherche en biologie v茅g茅tale before commencing his PhD studies in plant ecology at Oxford. He is one of 140 recipients of the Clarendon Scholarship, which covers his tuition, college fees, living costs, and research costs for four years.

Norton鈥檚 master鈥檚 research took him to Northern Labrador, where he studied how Inuit and local communities use indigenous plants for food, health, and medicine.

He studied at 秀色短视频 under Dr. Christian Lacroix, professor of biology, who recently co-authored a paper with Norton on his honours research project. As a 秀色短视频 student, he was awarded three consecutive NSERC undergraduate student research awards鈥攁n impressive accomplishment in securing these highly competitive awards.

The 秀色短视频 is once again partnering with Humber College to present The Insider鈥檚 Guide to Writing and Publishing for Young Readers, a workshop for writers of children鈥檚 and young adult literature. No matter what stage of writing you鈥檙e at鈥攆rom concept to first draft or beyond鈥攖his workshop offers the inside scoop on the world of publishing and self-publishing. Join us July 12 through 14 in beautiful Charlottetown, PEI, on the lovely 秀色短视频 campus, for a workshop full of practical suggestions and writing inspiration.

Created by eminent publishers and facilitators Cynthia Good and Rick Wilks, the workshop, now in its third year, is a collaboration between 秀色短视频 and Toronto's Humber College, home to the renowned Humber School for Writers and Creative Book Publishing program. This summer鈥檚 expanded workshop will have more time devoted to writing feedback, and Sarah Sawler, children鈥檚 author and publicist, will join the facilitators to highlight what every writer needs to know about getting their books into the hands of readers.

Each workshop day is divided into writing and publishing segments. The hours dedicated to writing will provide the opportunity to get feedback on some of your writing, or to develop an outline for your book if you are in the development stage.

The publishing segments will look at the current publishing landscape, explore traditional and self-publishing models, provide business details, and help you to construct a query letter for publishers and literary agents.

The workshop will open with a lecture and reception sponsored by Annick Press, legendary publisher of Robert Munsch, Ruth Ohi, Kathy Stinson, and Kevin Sylvester. Participants will leave the workshop with new directions for their manuscripts, enriched knowledge of publishing, and an effective query letter.

About the facilitators:

Cynthia Good has been a leader in the publishing industry for many years. She was appointed the first editorial director of Penguin Books Canada and went on to become president and publisher. Over her twenty years with Penguin, she established a publishing program, which grew into one of the most successful in Canada. After Penguin she joined Humber College.

At Humber, Cynthia developed the Creative Book Publishing program and mentored over 300 students. In 2014, she stepped down from that position to focus on program and community outreach until retiring in 2016. In recognition of her accomplishments at Humber, she was named director emeritus and was awarded the Humber Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Rick Wilks co-founded Annick Press in 1975 and has been its sole director since 2000. Annick has been recognized as one of the most innovative publishers of fiction, non-fiction and picture books for children and young adults, publishing, among others, Robert Munsch, Sharon McKay, Kathy Stinson, Allan Stratton, and Kevin Sylvester. Rick oversees all aspects of the publishing process, with a special emphasis on acquisitions.

His publishing philosophy stresses projects that are dynamic and developed to the highest literary standards. A joy of reading experience is essential to capture the minds and hearts of youth. Annick titles encourage critical thinking and the development of children鈥檚 inner resources so that, in addition to becoming confident, contributing members of their communities, they are also engaged with society at large and their peers around the globe. Annick was recently nominated for International Publisher of the Year.

Rick also co-founded the National Reading Campaign, where he has served as co-chair and currently sits as a board member. The Campaign鈥檚 goal of advocating for reading as a national public good addresses one of Rick鈥檚 highest priorities.

Sarah Sawler is a publicist, author, and freelance writer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is the author of the regional bestseller 100 Things You Don't Know About Nova Scotia and 100 Things You Don't Know About Atlantic Canada - For Kids. For the past nine months, she's also been working closely with Cape Breton YouTuber Frankie MacDonald on Be Prepared: The Frankie MacDonald Guide to Life, the Weather, and Everything. Occasionally, she writes about children's literature for Atlantic Books Today, and has had numerous reviews published in the Quill & Quire鈥檚 "Books for Young People" section.

In addition to writing (and promoting) her own books, Sarah markets other people's books as the publicist for Conundrum Press, a literary graphic novel publisher based in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Previously, she worked as a publicist at Fierce Ink Books, an independent publisher that specialized in young adult books. She's also a former bookseller; years of experience at Woozles Children's Bookstore provided her with valuable insight into everything from cover design to merchandising.

Sarah has also worked as an online technical writing instructor for Dalhousie University's Continuing Education Department, spoken to elementary school classes, facilitated professional development courses, spoken at conferences and festivals, signed piles of books, and once, created a fictional biography for a rooster.

April鈥檚 edition in the Island Studies Lecture Series features author Katherine Dewar speaking about 鈥淭he Making of a Canadian Military Nursing Heroine.鈥� The heroine in question is Prince Edward Island鈥檚 own Georgina Fane Pope (1862鈥�1938) and is the subject of Katherine鈥檚 soon-to-be-released book from Island Studies Press: Called to Serve. The April Island Studies Lecture takes place on Tuesday, April 17, at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of 秀色短视频鈥檚 SDU Main Building.

How does a young woman, born in 1862 into privileged circumstances in Prince Edward Island, rise to the top echelons of Canadian military nursing leadership? This presentation discusses Georgina Pope鈥檚 path to power through the second half of the 19^th century and into the 20^th. Among other things, it addresses the significance her privileged and powerful lineage, the influence of her parents on her world view, and the inspiration of Florence Nightingale鈥攚ho invoked in Pope a 鈥渂urning desire鈥� to become an 鈥渁rmy nurse鈥� in a faraway land. The story takes us from Georgie鈥檚 rather sheltered life in Victorian Prince Edward Island to the 鈥淏oston States鈥�; to the dangerous and primitive conditions she experienced as superintendent of nurses in two South African Wars; to her work in the formation of the nursing component of the Canadian Army Medical Corps (PAMC); and to the battlefields of Europe during the First World War.

Katherine Dewar is the author of the award-winning book, Those Splendid Girls: The Heroic Service of Prince Edward Island Nurses in the Great War, 1914鈥�1918. Katherine is retired from a career as a nursing instructor at the PEI School of Nursing and is now committed to researching PEI鈥檚 colourful nursing history. Those Splendid Girls was shortlisted for an Atlantic Book Award, won Publication of the Year from the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation and the City of Summerside鈥檚 Heritage and Culture department. Katherine herself is the recipient of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation Award of Honour for her outstanding contribution to Prince Edward Island Heritage.

The 秀色短视频鈥檚 School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) annual Student Design Expo will showcase the best in student, sustainable, and green engineering in Atlantic Canada on Friday, April 20. Student design teams have been working with industry or community partners since September to find innovative, sustainable solutions for their unique challenges.

Student projects will be set up for public viewing at various stations on the first floor of the School of Sustainable Design Engineering building on the 秀色短视频 campus. The Student Design Expo begins with a short ceremony at 1:00 pm. Projects are available for viewing through the afternoon, with an award ceremony beginning at 4:00 pm. A brief panel discussion about opportunities for design engineering graduates begins at 4:30 pm.

More than two-dozen student projects will be on display. The projects are diverse in scope, and range from a virtual reality tour of the renovations at Province House (in partnership with Parks Canada) to a waste-water treatment system for households in a village in remote Pakistan.

鈥淓ngineers do not become proficient at design by reading text books or attending lectures,鈥� said Dr. Nicholas Krouglicof, dean of the SSDE. 鈥淭hey do so by practicing design. At the SSDE we integrate real-world design problems into every semester of the four-year program. Through these projects students are immersed in a realistic engineering environment where they are expected to interact with external clients, develop design solutions, and conform to the best practices of the profession.鈥�

The panel discussion is entitled 鈥淭he Future is Bright鈥攆or a Design Engineer鈥�, and will be moderated by Dr. Krouglicof.
