ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletics and Recreation announced the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Panther Athletes of the Week for the week of September 16-22. ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletics and Recreation showcases these talented athletes to recognize their hard work and dedication to their respective sports throughout the seasons. ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletes of the Week are also nominated to Atlantic University Sport and Canadian Interuniversity Sport for possible mention in the region and/or country.
Who: Katherine Koughan, Women's Field Hockey and Chris Desousa, Men's Hockey
What: ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Panther Athletes of the Week
When: Week of September 16-22
Why: During the first Atlantic University Field Hockey Tournament, Koughan played with poise and confidence controlling the play from the sweeper position. Her calm confidence with the ball settled the play and created many offensive opportunities for her teammates. Koughan dribbled the ball through many defenders to score her first goal of the season. She played a major role in both defensive and offensive penalty corners. On the offensive side, she was the stick stopper and helped the team score multiple times on offensive penalty corner chances. Koughan is a second-year student from Stratford and is enrolled in the bachelor of business administration program.
Corkum to lead Women's Volleyball Club
ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletics and Recreation announced this week that Josh Corkum will lead the Women's Volleyball Club as Head Coach.
Corkum has an extensive background in volleyball-the former AUS Men's Volleyball student-athlete with the UNB Reds also played in the Volleyball Nova Scotia Provincial Program. His coaching background includes Volleyball PEI U16, PEI Canada Games, Volleyball Nova Scotia provincial teams and Nova Scotia clubs, as well as junior high and high school programs in Nova Scotia. Corkum has also coached internationally at the University of Maine. He's been very involved with the introduction, development, and promotion of volleyball of all ages and skill-sets.
'They're a great bunch of girls. They really have a passion for getting this program up and running,' said Corkum in an interview with The Guardian. 'They're becoming very close. It's sort of becoming a little volleyball family.'
The team will kick off their season in competition play during the Mount Allison University tournament on October 5 and 6.

Panther fans are invited to come out this weekend to watch exciting university sport action. In addition to home games, our women's rugby team will take on StFX in Nova Scotia but fans can watch live on AUStv!
Nathan Keoughan performance—October 5
Bass-baritone Nathan Keoughan returns to perform at his alma mater on Saturday, October 5 at 7:30 pm in the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ. Nathan got his start in the performing world as Roy Gardner in the Prince Edward Island production of Anne & Gilbert. While spending his summers working in theatre, he studied voice at the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ under the direction of Stephen Bouey and Sung Ha Shin-Bouey. Nathan continued his studies in Boston, Massachusetts at the New England Conservatory under the direction of Maestro Stephen Lord. In Boston he had the opportunity to learn and perform such roles as Speaker & Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Pangloss/Voltaire (cover) in Candide, Figaro in La Nozze de Figaro, The Mayor in Doctor Miracle, and Le Viceroy (cover) in La Pericholé.
Nathan has just recently finished his third season at the Highlands Opera Studio as a part of their Independent Studies Program. Past HOS roles include Sarastro in Die Zaubeflöte and Colline in La Bohéme which he will reprise this October at Cowtown Opera in Calgary. Nathan is thrilled to be back at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ for his first recital as a guest artist. In collaboration with pianist Frances McBurnie, Nathan will perform a collection of song cycles by Ibert, Finzi, and Wolf as well as a selection of opera arias and show tunes.

Who: Sarah Stanley, Women's Soccer and Mathew Brenton, Men's Hockey
What: ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Panther Athletes of the Week
When: Week of September 23-29
Why: A third-year business student from Charlottetown, PEI, in her fourth year of eligibility, Stanley scored both game-winning goals in the Panthers weekend victories over the No. 1 AUS-ranked Dalhousie Tigers and the Saint Mary's Huskies. She is now tied for sixth in AUS scoring with three goals, all scored in this past weekend's games. Stanley was also named this week's Atlantic University Sport and Canadian Interuniversity Sport Athlete of the Week.
Brenton had a strong performance during the men's hockey 5-1 win over Dalhousie in pre-season action last Friday night at MacLauchlan Arena. Brenton had a goal and an assist, and was a key element to the forecheck. He was also strong on the power play and penalty kill. Brenton is a fourth-year business student from Stewiacke, NS.

ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ mourns the passing of honorary degree recipient Dr. J. Clair Callaghan
ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Clair Callaghan, ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ honorary degree recipient and former professor at St. Dunstan's University, in Halifax, on September 26, 2013. His burial took place in Rollo Bay, PEI on October 2, 2013.
'On behalf of the entire University community, I'd like to extend sincere condolences to Clair's family and friends,' said ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz. 'ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ was fortunate to count this remarkable man-who furthered post-secondary education in the field of engineering-as a member of our family, and during this time, we, too, feel a tremendous loss.'
Born in Ebbsfleet, PEI in 1933, Dr. Callaghan began his education in his home community, but attended SDU for the completion of his Grade 12. He earned a BA from St. Dunstan's, Pre-engineering from St. FX, a Bachelor of Engineering from the Nova Scotia Technical College (later the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS), and a Master of Science from MIT. During this time, he was also an assistant teacher. From 1956 to 1958, 'Copie', as he was known by, began his academic career by heading up the Engineering Program at SDU.
Dr. Callaghan went on to serve as Assistant Professor at the Nova Scotia Technical College. In 1966, he and his family transferred to Montreal where he taught, and also served as Dean of Engineering and Computer Science, at Sir George Williams University (later Concordia). 'Copie' returned to Halifax in 1977 to become President of TUNS, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure, all phases of the university flourished.
As was noted in the SDU Class of 1953 anniversary booklet, Clair Callaghan served on many boards and presented numerous papers, 'the most exciting of which was a special lecture to the First World Congress on Engineering Education Training in 1988.' He holds patents for the Haul-Down System for the Canadian Navy and was president of Cabletec Ltd. and Allac Consultants Ltd.
In 1987, the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ paid tribute to Dr. Callaghan by awarding him with an honorary degree. He also received an honorary degree from Concordia University.
CBC Dragons' Den star headlines ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ student entrepreneurial event
David Chilton, best-selling author of 'The Wealthy Barber' and 'The Wealthy Barber Returns' and Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den is coming to Charlottetown on October 28. Chilton will headline Enactus (Entrepreneurial Action Us) ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ's event on entrepreneurship and innovation which will be held at the Confederation Centre of the Arts on Monday, October 28 at 7:00 pm.
Chilton's 75-minute keynote address will provide attendees with valuable information on his experiences as well as advice on entrepreneurship and financial planning. Five hundred free copies of 'The Wealthy Barber Returns' books will also be distributed to lucky attendees. The ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ student-led event will kick off with a PEI Small Business Panel Discussion featuring four local entrepreneurs-Jeff Squires of PEI Brewing Company and Cavendish Beach Music Festival; Gillian McCrae of GetGifted; Joelle MacPhee of Ooka Island; and Matthew Jelley of Maritime Fun Group.

Prices are subject to sales tax and a capital improvement theatre fee of $2. University and college students require student ID cards to obtain the reduced student rate.

Cox & Palmer supports Panther Soccer and Alumni Day
ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletics and Recreation announce Cox & Palmer has come on board to support 'Panther Soccer Alumni Day' on Saturday, October 5 when the Panthers host Memorial University. The women will compete at 3:00 pm, while the men's game will begin at 5:15 pm.
'We are very pleased and appreciative of Cox & Palmer's support of Panther Soccer,' commented ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Athletics and Recreation Director Bill Schurman. 'The leadership shown by the firm's ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ alumni- Alanna Taylor and Nathan Beck-has made the partnership possible.'
'Both of us are thrilled to be able to give back to the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ soccer program. We have great memories of our times spent playing soccer at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ, and we are very happy to have Cox & Palmer sponsor this program,' said Taylor and Beck.

Erika Ritter: ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Writer in Residence
Erika Ritter, a celebrated playwright, humourist, essayist, fiction writer, and CBC Radio writer and host, is ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ's Writer in Residence from September 30-October 11. Ritter's published works include: Automatic Pilot (play); the humorous essay collections Urban Scrawl and Ritter in Residence; The Hidden Life of Humans (novel); The Great Big Book of Guys: Alphabetical Encounters with Men; and, most recently, The Dog by the Cradle, The Serpent Beneath: Some Paradoxes of Human-Animal Relationships. The radio adaptation of Automatic Pilot won an ACTRA Award for Best Radio Drama.
She has been a humour columnist, social satirist, and travel writer for newspapers and magazines. With CBC Radio, she hosted a daily national two-hour interview program, for which she won an ACTRA Award as Best Host, a weekly author-interview program, and most recently 'Ontario Morning.' Ritter has been a guest host of numerous CBC Radio programs. She has also written a bi-monthly humour column 'Unmuzzled' for Dogs in Canada, and is a frequent public speaker on such subjects as gender relationships, comedy, and the interior lives of animals.
Ritter lives in Toronto, but contrives to be out of town, especially on PEI, whenever she can, and takes her writer's block with her wherever she goes. Her Writer in Residency is sponsored by the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ English Department.
Ritter will give a public reading on Tuesday, October 8, at 7:30 pm in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Her reading is co-sponsored by the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ English Department and the Gallery. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend!
