ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ releases findings from Island Studies external review

On Wednesday, October 30, the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ hosted a public meeting to release the report of an external panel that was commissioned to review the Institute of Island Studies.

The review, initiated by Vice-President Research and Graduate Studies Robert Gilmour and interim Vice-President Academic Christian Lacroix in June, examined the role and governance of the institute in relation to ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ's Island Studies programs and courses, as well as its connections with the PEI and broader community.

Earlier in the year, ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ did not renew the contract for the institute's director due to budgetary restraints, but officials were quick to assure stakeholders that the study of islands is an important aspect of the University's programming.

'Many people with an interest in the Institute contacted us to voice concerns about its future,' said Lacroix. 'We felt it was vital to have an unbiased, independent review conducted that would give feedback on how to move forward. With the receipt of the reviewers' recommendations, and our newly-established Island Studies Futures Committee now in place, Island Studies and the Institute are in good hands.'

The final report from the three-member panel-Dr. Liette Visseur, Dr. Graham Whitelaw, and Hon. David MacDonald-was compiled after the reviewers held several on-campus forums and interviews with key stakeholders. The report contains 29 recommendations, grouped into six categories: overarching recommendations, administration, governance, educational initiatives, administrative and financial support, and Canada Research and UNESCO chairs.

The mandate of the Island Studies Futures Committee, chaired by ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Associate Professor of History Dr. Ed MacDonald, is to review the recommendations of the external IIS review panel, seek input through consultation with colleagues, and make recommendations on how to structure and implement changes to IIS. The terms of reference for the committee were also unveiled at the public meeting. Committee members include chair MacDonald, Ann Grayborn (IIS advisory board chair), Harry Baglole (community representative), Dr. Neb Kujundzic (interim Dean of Arts), and Dr. Jim Randall (Master of Arts in Island Studies program coordinator). Institute of Chartered Accountants of PEI recognizes ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ alumni and faculty

Distributed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of PEI:

In September, two ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ alumni-Michael Fitzpatrick CA; and Ryan Pineau, CA-and one faculty member-Michael Cassidy, FCA-were recognized with Institute of Chartered Accounts of PEI awards during a celebratory event at the Delta Prince Edward.

Michael Fitzpatrick CA, and Ryan Pineau CA, were both recognized with Early Achievement Awards. This award is presented to a CA, who within the first ten years since qualifying as a CA, demonstrates excellence in professional, civic, charitable, or community service, and/or remarkable accomplishments in their career.

ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ professor, Michael Cassidy FCA, was honoured with a Fellowship of Chartered Accountants award. FCA awards are awarded based on meritorious service which had honoured the profession over a lengthy period of time. Candidates have to demonstrate exceptional achievement in career, community service, and service to the profession. Cassidy was honoured by his colleagues for his outstanding contribution to the CA profession through his extraordinary capabilities as an educator, mentor, and role model to students considering the CA profession or entrepreneurship as a career. Cassidy, who obtained his CA designation in 1986, has spent much of his career not only as a successful businessman, but as a sessional lecturer and Assistant Professor at the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ School of Business, teaching primarily in the areas of Accounting and Entrepreneurship. He has also authored and delivered many course programs ranging in topics from marketing and customer service to challenges facing young people wanting to become an entrepreneur. Cassidy's charismatic personality and infectious enthusiasm has made him a much sought-after speaker for both private companies and government organizations in the areas of accounting, marketing, and sales seminars. Giving back to his community is another one of Cassidy's great strengths. He has been a long time coach of hockey, soccer, and baseball, and has been very active in his church. Cassidy lives in Charlottetown with his wife Mary Jane, and their four children.

Fitzpatrick co-founded PEI's first father/son accounting firm, Fitzpatrick and Co., which was recognized as one of Atlantic Canada's fastest growing companies in 2011 and 2012. He is an avid volunteer in the CA profession, both provincially and nationally, but also lends his accounting expertise in his community as well, serving as treasurer for the Catholic Family Services Bureau. He also serves on the boards of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of PEI, Stars for Life Foundation for Autism, Liberal Association of PEI, and the Board of Examiners for CICA. Somehow Fitzpatrick also finds time to coach minor hockey, and is active in youth employment future on PEI. He graduated from ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ in 2002, and lives in Pleasant Grove with his wife Lori and young son Ira.

Pineau graduated first in his class from the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ School of Business in 2005, and quickly became the youngest partner in MacPherson Roche Smith & Associates. Pineau furthered his education in accounting by completing a variety of in-depth tax courses, and is known for his tax expertise. He manages his firm's income tax practice, and also teaches several professional development tax courses to his peers. 'Giving Back' has always been important to Pineau, as demonstrated by his countless volunteer positions. He serves on the boards of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of PEI, the Competency Map Committee of CICA, and the City of Charlottetown Economic Development Advisory Board. He is also treasurer for the PEI Progressive Conservative Party, St. Pius X Knights of Columbus, Innovation & Technology Association of PEI, Queens County Residential Services, past president of the Progressive Conservative Youth Association, and past youth delegate for the PEI Occupational Health and Safety Board. In 2011, Pineau established the Paul Ryan Pineau Award, which provides a bursary to the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ student with the highest mark in the taxation course. He resides in Charlottetown with his wife Becky.

Congratulations to our ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ award winners!

ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Concert Series presents Kevin MacLean

On Friday, November 15 at 7:30 pm, saxophonist Kevin MacLean will perform as part of the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Concert Series. 'Worldly Inspirations' will feature music from England, Japan, the United States, and Prince Edward Island. MacLean will collaborate with Frances McBurnie, Karem Simon, Branden Kelly, and perform a world premiere by composer Dr. Rick Covey.

MacLean has most recently been concerto soloist with the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Wind Symphony and the PEI Symphony. Past performances include the World Association of Bands and Ensembles Conference, North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, and the National Music Festival. He is currently the saxophone instructor at ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ.

The centrepiece of this recital will be the world premiere of Covey's 'The Moment When.' This large-scale solo work was commissioned by MacLean in the summer of 2013. MacLean has worked closely with Covey and is excited to premiere this exciting new addition to Canadian saxophone repertoire.

The inspiration behind this extensive solo work is the song cycle, common to musical theatre. Compositional choices were made based on theatrical considerations first, such as plot, imagery, and character development, resulting in a unique addition to the solo saxophone repertoire. This dramatic work is comprised of seven diverse movements, each connected with a brief pause signifying the sectional division. The result is an overall musical form that is both continuous and a series of short, individual movements that form a clear dramatic structure.

Tickets are available at the door ($15 adults/$10 seniors and students) or by contacting the ÐãÉ«¶ÌÊÓƵ Music Department at (902) 566-0507 or music@upei.ca.
